"The Way of One" - is undoubtedly the best thing released by project of its whole history. This is not surprising - every next album Koan produces really, honestly, every time performing incredible - endlessly adding in skill. This album shows how close electronic sounds can come to the best orchestral works. On the basis of the most progressive chill-out basement composer writes a stunning complexity and touching melodic thread. They are also extremely accurately immerse the listener in some fantastic (does not really exists), but very historic, past of an entire civilization. To be honest, I'm not used to hear so much saturation, so much drive in the chill-out music, which usually draws the atmosphere with much more minimalist tools. Here in the album a myriad of sounds and dozens of synths, connecting and decay, creating a truly extraterrestrial dynamics. Every single moment with terrible force involves the listener into magical Koan universe.
Do not even know what to say about the technical performance. The level is so strong that no words of comparison, and it makes no sense to compare. One thing you can be sure with is anyone who considers himself a fan of chill-out and ethno-music simply must hear this. At least to be aware of how it happens. The unique style of the project again revived after the recent experiments with more dark sound. Unbridled melodic magic just grabs you from the first to the last track. The authors have learned to do well their albums diverse. Here in the album many different moods have taken their places. There is a place for the stunning touching sagas as Eagle's Tale and Tears of Thunder Spirit. There is also a place for anxiety, tension, almost experimental sound of Tribute to Hiawatha and Uenuku, and for heroic anthem Fighting with Unchegila. Crazy craftsmanship of tracks complemented talent compilation of CD. It always gives a huge plus to any disk of any project.
Koan is the sort of music, I always expect a lot. Because Koan is a brand and design, musical phenomenon and a pioneer of domestic chill-out scene. For more than 20 years of domestic and foreign listeners have the pleasure of hearing works of project. Each disc again shows the progress of sound, melodies, ideas and styles. Koan is a large-scale cross-cultural phenomenon. Together with Koan we have already visited China and Japan, Turkey and the Arabian sands, in Peru and Mexico. Koan discography is a whole music encyclopedia of ethno-music lover traveler, made with love and awe to the listener with respect to different cultures.
Today's world has unique properties that are revealed to us directly in real time. Yesterday’s individual trends are gone. We are waiting for brand new global creative arts for global world! This masterpiece was made of three branches. Back in 2003 America’s TV was exploded by DreamKeeper the movie that became sort of impression basis for the album. CD cover also joins here some real art power. It is created by one of the Russian most impressive & famous landscapers.
To finish this review I have to recommend all of you The Way Of One by Koan. It is really original sound along with very strong production. Musical wealth and level of talent are too personal feelings for every person but if you want my opinion I will say that this album is great and original enough to place it on top of your wishlist. Today’s chillout departments of large events & fests are full of smashing live-performances but if you’re party dj and want to mix up some psychill pearls you should try your luck with this one. Everyone who consider himself as psychill & downtempo lounge lover must have this one for sure.

Here it comes again: A very particular feeling of analogue warmth and depth, intense harmony, and exciting rhythmic textures that could well be the soundtrack of a movie. It is “The Way of One”, the latest album by Koan.
The duo has been active for more than 20 years now, and once again they manage to set a prime example for Ambient sound - because their music instantly creates a mood, a very intense atmosphere. “The Way of One” has been inspired by the mythology of the North American natives, it sets to music traditional motives and beliefs: It’s all about the mystery of creation, about pairs and opposites, about celestial beings and spirits of nature. In consequence the atmosphere is as dynamic as it can be, an ongoing change. Sometimes it’s created by complex melodic pad sounds that take the listener to ethereal heights almost without percussive support, and then again it’s lively grooves which are even danceable. Koan deliver a work that checks all the boxes for a classic album, or even a legend: It is a story with beginning and end, taking unpredictable twists and turns, changing between blissful excitement and quiet moments of reflection. Nick Brennans Section records bring us label mates Koan's latest psybient album 'Argonautica' and people, it's a beaut!
It takes the Greek legend of Jason and the argonauts epic tale and uses it as the inspirational template to create a warm and psychedelic soundscape.
It opens with 'Orpheus and Eurydice' and it really does give the feeling of casting off onto calm seas with echoing, lapping arpeggios and breezes of warm flowing synth's. This combined with the liquid feel to the sparse rhythmic percussion really does give the feeling of being afloat.
There is a feeling of traversing deeper waters with 'Lost Lyre' and the melodies become more intricate and layered. I've found with each new listen another hidden gem of melody and effects become uncovered.
As the album develops the beats become more pronounced and the BPM's go up a notch or two for 'Irida Falls for Morpheus Pits', 'Crying Prozepine' (Blue mix) and 'Pegasus' where the former of the three morphs halfway through into lush breaks and washes of arpeggiated echoing synth.
Although the synth's maintain their trance like feel throughout the course of the album they never become repetitive and the programming constantly changes and evolves creating an emotive, affecting and never static listening experience.
'Seven Mirrors of Atlas' is a warm psychedelic dubby workout with cavernous echoes, deep swathes of bass, snares in the deep and once more multi layered soothing melodies and intelligent fx.
The journey comes to an end with 'Ladon' (Serpent Mix) which after more finely placed tripped out fx and slowed breaks closes with uplifting waves of synths.
This album is an absolute gem and having Nick Brennan (Tripswitch) on mastering duties really puts the icing on the cake to this already accomplished masterpiece.

November 2012Downtempo electronica.Last December's forerunner to Argonautica - Circe's Touch Remixes - left me with high expectations regarding this release and these are certainly fulfilled now. From the very opening bars of this album you know you are in for a deliriously lush and cinematic listening experience. Koan manage to craft some very beautiful melodic themes that are full of soaring, gliding, drifting emotion yet they never fall into the trap of becoming too saccharine or overly sentimental. A deft blend of deep pads, crystalline or burbling arps, meandering washes and heaving yet restrained lead lines has the listener floating in rapture for much of the time. The beats on Argonautica are a delight - complex and full of shifting detail whilst blissfully serene and gently lulling; that is not to say that the rhythms are without their power, especially around the mid-section there are passages of chilled dance grooves that defy immobility. Argonautica establishes an ultra modern soundscape of top notch electronica until mentally linked with the ancient inspirational concepts fuelling the music - then the journey really begins - the compositions take on a timeless quality, becoming increasingly absorbing and transporting. |

Начиная с 2004, одновременно с выходом первого трека на компиляции Dissidents, дует начинает постепенно проявляться на просторах московской электронной сцены. Сначала потихоньку проникая в закрытые клубы и на приватные вечеринки, музыканты бытсро переходят в концентрированную атаку: за серией выступлений следует выход дебютного альбома на лейбле Otium. Так началась дискография проекта. Видимо это было не случайным совпадением, а четко запланированной и хорошо расчитанной акцией, так как с этого момента релизы Koan выходят словно бы по часам и проект каждый раз как бы "ставит ногу" на новую ступеньку, обогощая список изданных релизов как качественно, так и с точки зрения престижа. Еще ни одной промашки не было допущено за четыре года упорной работы.
Судите сами: практически сразу же вслед за Talking Stones (2005) выходят When Invisible Becomes Visible EP (2005) и микс-альбом Signs (2006), которые расширяют границы творчества Koan предлагая совсем другой взгляд на ethnic lounge, чем тот, что мы слышим на первом альбоме. В том же 2006 году выходит первый международно-изданный сольный диск Koan под названием Two Moon Butterflies (2006). Релиз предложил слушателям абсолютно новый для проекта уровень качества звучания, несколько неизгладимых хитов и был вскоре полностью распродан всеми крупными интернет-магазинами. Параллельно с работой над новой программой Koan выпускается на сборниках крупнейших лейблов, и проводит активное лето, участвуя в европейских фестивалях.
В 2007 году музыканты немного затаились, ожесточенно работая над новым стилем, новым звуком и новыми идеями. Промежуточным итогом года стал выход 5 треков Fulfilled Wish EP (2007). Кроме того продолжаются издания на компиляциях. В 2008 году выходит цифровой релиз Watermarks Remixes - из 4 треков, которые включают ремикс от Behind Blue Eyes.
В процессе развития качество звука проекта постоянно повышается. Заметно, что ребята всерьез увлечены соврменными техниками чилл-аута и эмбиента - их музыка подвергается метаморфозам, развивается, обогощается новыми идеями и концепциями. Сегодня я предлагаю вам обзор нового сольного диска Koan, выпущенного на немецкой студии Blue Tunes Rec.

1. Для тех, кто слышал первый альбом проекта Talking Stones этот трек покажется не просто знакомым - он обязательно произведет очень сильное впечатление хотя бы тем, что с первых нот подобие мелодики и поразительная разница в качестве звучания диссоциативной бомбой взорвут сознание любого, кто помнит тот, старый альбом. Для тех же, кто его не помнит я настоятельно рекомендую достать и послушать... хотя бы для того, чтобы чуть-чуть более выпукло представить себе творческий путь, путь развития отедельно взятого российского электронного проекта. Почему именно этот трек? Да потому что он - продолжение, интерпретация одного из ударных треков 2005 года. Кроме того, что трек хорош в сравнении он и сам по себе представляет весьма и весьма удачную композицию с качающим битом, перекличкой свирелей и солнечным вечерним настроем. Глубокие духовые тона "вылезающие" с заднего фона во второй половине хронометража удачно дополнены струнной мелодией, которая развивается нанизываясь сама на себя, а затем как бы настолько подавляет собственное окружение, что остается чуть ли ни одна. Завершается же трек тем же с чего и начинался, замыкая тем самым впечатление.
2. Вторая композиция начинается более мрачно. Как будто солнце уже село и с моря начинает веять холодком. Бит все тот же качающий, но более густой и тягучий. Окружение также более плавное и размеренное, более глубокое и более темное что ли. Однако мелодия, друзья, все та же коановская! Отрывыстая и нежная она как бы парит над эти всем - вырывясь поначалу из басовых струн гитары и перетекая вверх на более тонкие и субтильные тона. Она развивается почти с начала трека и к середине представляет собой уже полноценную ловко скроенную историю, развивающуюся на нескольких переплетающихся и поддерживающих друг друга уровнях. Не будучи сложно сама по себе, она реализвана так, что процесс развития поддерживает в ней искру жизни, а следовательно привлекательности, с начала до конца. Это вообще довольно-таки характерная черта треков Koan - простые, сочные мелодии как бы замкнутые в себе и оттененные мультиинструментальным окружением. И надо признаться, что от релиза к релизу этот трюк удается ребятам все лучше и лучше.
3. Searching for the planet Venus - продолжает погружение в альбом. Солнце здесь уже однозначно ушло в глубина моря и вокруг нас по-любому темень ночных джунглей с редкими отблесками костров. Бит хотя и полегче, чем в предыдущих треках, но более дробный и оттого слегка раздражающий. Вместе со звучками низкой вибрации, эхами наверху диапазона и скомкаными гаснущими арпеджио это создает немного неспокойную, чуть пугающую обстановку. Видимо те, кто в это время вперил взгляд в звездное небо в поисках пресловутой Венеры чувствуют в полной мере эффекты употребленного горячительного и начинают сомневаться - смогут ли обнаружить искомую планету. Этот трек рекомендуется ставить в чилл-атуах разного рода опенэйров в начале ночи - в качестве разгона в сете, который далее предполагает быть поглубже и помрачнее.
4. Остров затонвуших кораблей начинается так, как ему и положено начинаться - с набора странных булькающе-звенящих звуков, разрозненность которых оказывается через полторы-две минуты ловко спланированной акцией (кто бы мог подумать!). К сожалению вынужден отметить, что и продолжается все в том же духе: неспокойный, суетливый бит служит основой довольно негармоничным и давящим ходам. Я это не очень люблю, одако ничего не попишешь - таково, видимо, настроение истории. Однако в треке есть динамика - во второй половине происходит немного однообразная, но все же мелодия, которая, правда, повторяясь раз за разом лишь усугубляет впечатление окончательности трагедии затонувших кораблей, привнося нотку душевного терзания в и без того мрачноватый пейзаж.
5. Надежду на избавление приносит с первых же нот Танец морских нимф (Dance of Nereids). Танец весьма необычен. Он начат цикличным куском поломанного ритма и модной нынче в популярной электронной музыке всех мастей пульсацией плотного синтетического аккорда. После превой трети трека эта тема затухает, после чего бит рождается вновь, но более глубокий. Он звучит так же с дополнением в виде пульсирующих звуков, но это уже не широко полосный резкий аккорд, а отрывистые звуки модулированного женского голоса тембра средней высоты. К середине хронометража композиция опять удивительно меняется. Бит комкается, все залипает и как бы в странной полуминутной заминке недолго не знеает куда идти... но почти тут же вновь продолжается с тем же глубоким битом, новыми наслоениями и всем, что мы уже слышали в первой половине трека. Более менее исход этому безобразию приходит к третьей четверти трека, где бит, оставаясь прежним по сути, становится более жирным и тягучим по форме. Лидирующие тона перебираются наконец-таки наверх диапазона и ситуация стремительно упорядочивается. В самом конце трека проявляется настоящая (не квакающая и не мерцающая) мелодия, которая не успев начаться, буквально отключает все что было до этого и рассыпается каскадом трезвучий, нисходящих и восходящих секвенций. Трек выстегивает не по-детски, я вам авторитетно заявляю. Не могу в точности сказать вам понравился ли он мне - я все-таки приверженец более мелодичного саунда - но то, что это заслуживает пристального внимания я вам гарантирую. Очень насыщено, неожиданно, нестандартно, многолико и многослойно. Временами кажется излишне помороченно, но, между тем, все еще достаточно динамично. Даже несколько провисонов слушаются скорее с легкостью, так как дают шанс немного разгрузить воспритие... но лишь для того, что бы по-новой докапаться до мозга. В общем: имеет смысл.
6. Одиссей под старым деревом совмещает в себе две казалось бы противополжных тенденции - с одной стороны характер бита, мерцание, да и сама синтетика звуков говорят за то, что здесь получают продолжение "нереиды-любительницы потанцевать", а с другой - с самого начала трека мы слышим трогательно-героическую мелодию, которая будучи очень короткой имеет невообразимое количество повторов в легких вариациях. Окружение же при этом бурлит: отовсюду вылезают низкие трубные звуки и гаснут всплески странных струн, мерцает то, проносится это... Во второй половине темп устаканивается на довольно-таки приличной скорости. Бит оставшись один на один с мелодией (которая так и не получила развития) становится суше и солиднее. Последние такты композиции отмечены общей релаксацией того тонуса, который был задан начиная середины трека. Нейтральный гитарный перебор как бы заземляет Одиссея, на чем история и заканчивается.
Не так давно я написал небольшую заметку об альбоме KOAN «Беловодье», а сейчас слушаю предыдущую пластинку этого chillout-дуэта - ибо «Беловодье» мне понравилось, и я решил продолжить знакомство с его музыкой.
Диск забит почти под завязку - 79+ минут уверенных и плотных ритмов в средних темпах, поверх которых живут увлекательные мелодии и удачно подобранные тембры (музыка здесь исключительно электронная), посредством которых создан яркий и запоминающийся саунд… наверное, не в последнюю очередь благодаря ему «When The Silence Is Speaking» воспринимается отнюдь не как фоновое музло для релакса и раскуривания кальяна, а как самостоятельный творческий результат… начав внимательно слушать пьесу за пьесой, мне так и не удалось нажать кнопку «стоп» - затянуло меня, захватило до самого финала. Где-то в глубине, под мелодиями, обитают и тихонько шевелятся вкрадчивые и основательные басовые линии, на основе которых авторы сперва формируют мелодическую структуру композиции, а затем облекают её в привлекательную аранжировку
Не могу не сказать, что «When The Silence Is Speaking» понравился мне несколько меньше, чем «Беловодье» - он чуть менее красив, чуть менее атмосферен. Если же, однако, доведётся послушать сперва этот релиз, и только потом «Беловодье», то никакого разочарования и пустопорожней траты времени не будет, и впечатления должны остаться самые благоприятные… Ибо талантливо и душевно.

The listening experience of their third album is not only a very 'deep' one because it gives the impression of vast acoustic spaces. Pad sounds rich in overtones and liquid echoes give rise to associations of whale songs, sometimes melodic sound entities crawl along the listener's ear and then again wondrous sonic structures drift by.This acoustic ocean spreads out between stimulating but yet unobtrusive Downbeat rhythms where there is enough space for all the elements to unfold. Like already the previous albums of Koan, 'The Fables of Belovodye' proves the two producers to be remarkably talented with regard to subtle psycho acoustics as well as sophisticated, organic and highly melodic compositions, each telling its very own story.

Lush downtempo and uplifting dance music.
Koan take as inspiration the ancient tale of mythological Circe - 'the loveliest of all the immortals' - and craft a powerfully emotive piece of lush melodic chillout. With strong hooks, heart-rending crescendos and delicate interludes, Koan weave a wordless female vocal thread among the constantly shifting electronica, choral synths and dreamy beats to great effect. The Asura remix retains much of the languid yet euphoric nature of the original, deep sub basses and clean synths. The Krusseldorf Muesli remix is more of a departure: shadowy and grumbling with contrasting spectral washes and glitchy percussion - beatless, approaching ambient in the midsection. Volume 2 is where the tempo picks up: a progressive Soundprank version strips back much of the original material to open up a more sinewy, stabbing dancefloor version. Nick Brennan continues the trance/dance treatment with a solid, thumping foundation and colourful electronica. Petit Ange morphs Circe's Touch into a somewhat icy, minimal techno mix with drifting stratospheric soft-centre. Roeth and Grey (a Koan side project) close the set with the final uptempo presentation: vivid colour, vibrant tone and a sense of fluctuating emotion to match the original.
ARTWORK:
I'm not sure what artwork accompanies the official version of these EPs - I have a promo copy with small images of both covers - both have the same basic image, different hues and titles. A stone statue with heavy drapery rolling in soft curves sits at the right side of the cover. A traditional Mediterranean pattern forms a border in keeping with the historical Greek flavour.
